5 comfortable (and stylish) shoes for travel

July 6, 2014 | by Rebecca Pattee

On my last trip to Europe, I traveled and average of 10 miles per day on foot and was thankful for my Nike 3.0 Dance Studio shoes. I made the mistake of wearing ballet flats one day on the trip and my feet ended up swollen and covered in blisters. You’ll likely want to bring along an extra pair of shoes for nights out or dressier occasions but during the day, you’ll want to wear stylish and comfortable shoes. My top 5 recommendations are below:

Nike Free 3.0 Dance Studio Cross Training Shoes
While these Nike Free 3.0 Dance Studio shoes were meant to be worn in the gym, they’re also excellent travel shoes. They’re lightweight, dry quickly and provide a slight amount of cushioning. I walked and hiked all over London and Scotland in these shoes and rarely wore the others that I brought with me. I also received several compliments on the style. The one downside? The shoes are lined in a light-weight mesh material and aren’t suitable for rainy day conditions.

Patagonia Maha Ballet Flat
The Patagonia Maha is one of the few ballet flats that I take with me on my travels. Unlike most ballet flats, the shoes are breathable, even if hot conditions. The interior shoebed has cushioning to help absorb shock and the sole has excellent traction on slippery surfaces, such as cobblestones.

Clarks Arbor Jade Walking Shoe
This shoe comes in a variety of colors, ranging from green to teal. The interior features an OrthoLite® which wicks away moisture to keep your feet cool and dry while you’re on the go.

Skechers Women’s Go Walk 2 Convertable Walking Shoe
These Skechers shoes are unique in that the heel folds down for backless wear. These lightweight, breathable shoes are sporty, chic and perfect for walking around big cities or on the beach.

Tom’s Women’s Canvas Slip-On
These shoes are cool, casual and easy to slip on. I’ve worn these shoes for many hours on previous trips and have found them to be very comfortable for walking around cities. They’re not the best choice for rainy days since the footbed takes a while to dry once it’s wet.
Starting at $27, amazon.com
